Chicken Sausage: While many of the meats in popular breakfasts can lead to bloating, Bianchini says chicken sausage is a great alternative to the greasy counterpart. “Look for brands that are low in sodium, free of nitrates and free of fillers, preservatives and sugars, all because they can increase bloating.”

Fruits: Some fruits can avoid bloating and have nutrients added to the breakfast plate (and something sweet!). “Berries are rich in anthocyanins and prebiotic polyphenols, and have been shown to reduce inflammation, a common trigger for swelling,” says Jenna Volpe (RDN), LD, CLT of Overall Living. “Berries are generally less likely to cause bloats compared to most other types of fruits because they have a low fudomap (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols).” Other fruits for breakfast include pineapples. Volpe says it is a low FODMAP fruit containing bromelain, an enzyme that supports natural digestion.

Volpe also says he is paying attention to whole wheat bread, FODMAP foods such as regular milk and cream, as well as seasonings such as garlic and onions. These are commonly used in delicious breakfasts such as omelettes and all bagel seasonings. “Some of the most common types of bloated breakfast foods are high-fodmap foods,” she points out.
