Dyson battery replacement ideas

When you invest in a quality vacuum cleaner, you expect it to last for years. My Dyson DC45 worked fine for a long time until the battery died. It won’t fully charge and the vacuum keeps stopping and starting.
I wanted to get a replacement battery, but the battery was old, expensive, and there was no guarantee that it would last long enough to justify the cost.
Before I part with my machine, I decided to try out a popular battery hack.
This is how it works. Replace the battery with the adapter that matches your Dyson model. This adapter has a built-in 20V lithium-ion battery that is used in power tools from famous brands such as Dewalt and Milwaukee.
The entire process takes about 5 minutes and the only tool required is a Phillips screwdriver.
I’m glad I made the switch because not only is my vacuum working like new again, but I can clean my entire house without having to stop and charge it.
Plus, with a 20V battery that works with all power tools, you can have a spare battery on hand.
One downside is that this hack makes the vacuum cleaner top-heavy. The 20V battery is heavier than the original Dyson one, adding about a pound to the weight of the unit. This can be a deal breaker if hand weight can be an issue.
We’ll explain everything you need to know.
As always, hacking is done entirely at your own risk and will definitely void your warranty.

How to install the battery adapter
1Get the right adapter

The label on your Dyson vacuum will tell you the type of battery (A or B).
My Dyson DC45 is type B.
Order an adapter of the appropriate type (A or B) that will work with your 20 V battery.
I use a Dewalt 20V 5Ah rechargeable battery. I was also able to use a Dewalt 20V 2Ah battery.
2open vacuum head

On my Dyson DC45, when I press the blue filter button, the vacuum head opens into two parts.

3Remove the original battery pack
Now you can remove the screws that secure the battery pack.
On the Dyson DC45, there is one screw behind the handle (pictured below, left).
The other screw is located just below the area where the washable filter is located (pictured below, right).

Check the screw head. In my case, it seems to be a Pozidrive screw, but I was able to remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
The battery pack can be removed by removing the screw.

4Insert the battery adapter
Insert the battery adapter and secure it in place using the same screws you removed.
Replace the vacuum head.

5Insert the 20V battery
Insert a fully charged 20V battery and you’re ready to go.

result
The first time I vacuumed with the new battery, I couldn’t believe how well the machine worked.
Even though I had just cleaned the floors and stairs with another vacuum, the Dyson still found all kinds of pet hair and dirt.

And best of all, I was able to vacuum the entire house without losing charge.
care
Please remove the 20V battery when the vacuum cleaner is not in use. Charge the battery if necessary. If you continue with standard maintenance such as cleaning the filter and brushes, we hope that your vacuum will last for many years to come.
