Lemon wonton soup

You’ll love the bright and flavorful lemon wonton soup. It is the perfect balance of flavorful homemade soup with store-bought frozen wantons, topped with avid and refreshing edamame and herb salad.

It’s a semi-homemade recipe, but it doesn’t skip in the flavor category. Plus, it’s ready to serve in 30 minutes (thank you, frozen wontons!)

Garnish with dumplings, sliced green chili peppers, edamame, soup bowls with chopped green onions, herbs. A spoon is placed in the bowl.

There’s something about lemon in the soup. We can all use a little (or many) of this time of year. Among our three families, one child or parent has been sick almost always since the holidays. Cue all soup recipes containing this lemony wonton soup. Every bite feels very nourishing and comforting. It reminds us of our one-pot lemon torterini soup, but with a fun Asian twist.

One-pot recipe, all you need to do is add all the ingredients to one pot and simmer until the wontons are cooked. Served with homemade herb Edamam salad, the OMG is very tasty.

Which brand of wontons do you recommend for this soup?

I recommend Trader Joe’s Frozen Wonton brand. I tried almost every frozen wonton, pot stick or gyoza from TJS. Filled with vegetarians and meat.

I also tested this with Costco frozen chicken wontons and they worked well too. We do not recommend using Chung’s brand Frozen Wontons for this soup. I first tested this recipe and it fell apart quickly.

Simmer the soup to enhance the flavor of the soup. Add wontons when freezing. Otherwise, they’ll be overcooked and fall apart. It is recommended to wait for the wontons to be added to the soup just before serving. We do not recommend using Chung’s brand Wontons for this soup. They quickly fell apart. I recommend Trader Joe’s Gyoza brand or similar type of Gyoza.

How to make wonton soup

For the complete recipe, scroll down to the recipe card to create a list of ingredients and instructions.

Make a lemony soup: Start by frying the onions – this is the key to a flavorful soup base. Next, add the garlic and ginger and saute until fragrant. Next, add soy sauce, fish sauce, lemon juice, chili garlic sauce and chicken soup to the pan. Whisk together the ingredients and bring to a boil. This smells delicious. Simmer the soup: When simmered, simmer the soup for 15-20 minutes. While the soup is simmering, make herb edamame salad. Throw all the salad ingredients at once. Prepare pickled jalapeño (if you like spicy food): Add the jalapeño, rice vinegar, honey and salt to another bowl and mix. Soak them and take a little of the edge of the heat from the jalapeño without compromising the flavor. Add frozen wanton to the soup and cook for 2-3 minutes. That’s always the time they need! Dinner is served! Pour each soup with herb salad and jalapeño.

When you boil the soup, it enhances the flavor of the soup by allowing all the ingredients to melt together. This is an important step in a soup with homemade soup. I don’t recommend skipping.

This wonton soup can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. To prevent cedar, we recommend storing wontons separately from the soup. Similarly, it is also suitable for adding additional frozen wantons to the soup when reheating leftovers.

To reheat, simply heat it in a stove or microwave until it is heated.
