With so many major trends and mistakes out there, it can be hard to keep up with the hype. That’s where we’re coming in! We dive into the Tiktok beauty scene and keep it up to date with the main ingredients that make waves with the app.
Tiktok’s Top Trend Skin and Hair Care Ingredients
Onion extract has a big moment with a 309.7% increase in the app. Hair repair treatment, this is alongside pumpkin seed oil, another rapidly growing ingredient that increases the search by 186.3%. It is worth noting that hair removal is an increasingly common problem as these two have gained so much traction. From younger generations experiencing stress-induced hair removal to women who are falling out of menopause, hair removal is more than a trend.
On the skincare side of the app, manuka honey and glycolic acid are in the spotlight. Manuka honey, sourced from New Zealand and Australia, is known for its antibacterial activity. As a natural skin care ingredient, it helps maintain skin hydration and protection. Outside of natural and overall ingredients, Tiktok has firmly landed in the courts of glycolic acid (hashtag has 1.3 million views on the app).
Is there any truth to the hype?
onion
So far, small studies have shown that using onion juice has a positive effect on hair loss cases (compared to tap water).
“Onions are finally recognized and are no longer an industry secret as a reliable ingredient in beauty,” says Tricologist, founder of Color Corrective Kelly Eates. “Antioxidants and flavonoids rich in onions offer antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory benefits. They are the best problem solvers for hair challenges.”
Pumpkin seed oil
Studies suggest that pumpkin seeds have a positive effect on men with alopecia. Pumpkin seed oil contains phytosterols, which inhibits enzymes that can convert testosterone into DHT (male sex hormones that contribute to hair loss). More scientific research is needed to determine how well this ingredient works for women’s hair removal.
Manuka Honey
Recognised for its antibacterial and wound healing properties, Manuka honey also appears to be useful for skin inflammation.
Glycolic Acid
Of all the trending ingredients we overturned today, glycolic acid is our professional favorite. why? It is a chemical dead skin that can be used by almost all skin types.
“Glycolic acid helps to extinction of the skin, a flashy scientific term for exfoliation,” says Kelly Dobos, cosmetic chemist and president of the Society of Social Chemists. “It loosens the desmosomes, small ‘adhesive’ spots between cells. ”
