The smoothie was my go-to breakfast for a while! Not only are they an all-in-one breakfast (usually) consumed by all of our family, but smoothies are the perfect way for my body to crave first thing in the morning for a morning meal packed with nutrients.
My boys don’t always eat a bowl of yogurt. I certainly don’t eat a salad for breakfast, but a green smoothie made with Greek yogurt? Everyone consumes it! shocking!
In this blog post I share some of my favorite healthy smoothie recipes using Greek yogurt as a base. They are simple, packed with protein, making them perfect for mixing your breakfast routine without having to rethink them.
5 smoothie recipes with Greek yogurt
It takes a bit of practice to make your smoothie perfect consistency, but you can fine-tune the liquid, fruit and yogurt ratio to best understand consistency. Yogurt tends to be a great way to add a little more blending power without getting heavy on top of the liquid.
Balance is everything. Get the right mixture of liquid and solids, make sure the flavors work together, and don’t taste like a blended salad (unless it’s yours, of course).
Can you make a smoothie with Greek yogurt?
Yogurt packs in a fantastic boost of protein that keeps you filling up, as well as giving the smoothie the rich, rich and creamy texture that we all love. Of course, you can also use regular non-Greek yogurt, but the Greek gets all the hype due to its extra protein content.
Unlike smoothies, which rely solely on milk and frozen fruits to hold the ingredients together, Greek yogurt serves as the perfect base. It blends everything beautifully, adding a little tang to make the overall taste more balanced and satisfying.
Why Greek yogurt is a good choice for smoothies
High protein content
Greek yogurt is one of my favorite ways to sneak into the excess protein, especially in the mornings. Just one cup will give you about 23 grams of protein! It’s a big deal when it comes to feeling completely and avoiding a morning crash. You can make your favorite protein powder (this is mine) even bigger, give it a bigger protein boost and easily hit 30 grams to start the day.
Rich and creamy texture
One of my pet pee is a watery smoothie or a frozen smoothie. The yogurt adds a truly amazing creaminess without being too watery or frozen. If you’re too concerned about the tangy flavor, use it a little, not a big deal.
Probiotics for gut health
Greek yogurt is packed with probiotics like other yogurts! Your bacteria help to keep your digestion going smoothly. But the advantages don’t stop there! A healthy gut can boost energy, support clear skin, and even play a role in mood and mental health. It is one of the simple everyday foods that do more for your body than you think.
Extremely versatile
In general, one of the best things about Greek yogurt is that it is very versatile. You can go sweet or flavorful with it. Use it as a base for salad dressings, blend it into a dessert-like smoothie, or drop it on top of tacos instead of sour cream. Whether you mix nut butter, throw frozen mixed berries, or blend with spinach, it somehow works. It’s like a small black dress in the fridge.
How to make a smoothie with Greek yogurt
Balance the flavor.
All the keys to delicious smoothies are balanced. Greek yogurt definitely has the tangy flavor of its signature, but I love it, but my kids don’t! Add sweet fruit (fresh or frozen), a spoonful of peanut butter, a splash of vanilla extract, or a scoop of flavored protein powder, and combine it into one delicious mixture.
Pay attention to the liquid to solid ratio.
I want that rich, creamy texture, not a glass of chunky juice. The trick is to just make the liquid to solid ratio right. A good rule of thumb? Use about ½ cup of liquid for a tablespoon of solids. From there, you can tweak it to get the consistency you like. There is too little liquid and your blender may be a pain. Too much is smoother than a smoother smoother than a smoothie. Play until just right!
Use unsweetened Greek yogurt.
My go-to Greek yogurt is mediocre, full fat and sugar-free. It gives you a blank slate so you can really create a flavour depending on what suits you feel – whether it’s fruity and sweet or something a little more green and rustic. Starting with a neutral base means what you control and bonus: no sugar creeps up. In other words, if you or your child likes things on the sweeter side, vanilla is always a great option.
Avoid excessively.
When it’s time to blend smoothies, aim for a blend that is sufficient to make everything wonderfully smooth. It’s a sweet spot with a thick, creamy texture. If you run it too long, the materials can start to warm up and break down.
Consider adding nutritional boosts.
Greek yogurt already brings solid protein to the table, but if you want to take things up, add a scoop of your favorite protein powder. It’s an easy way to boost your nutrition and add a little extra flavour. Protein helps stabilize energy and balance blood sugar levels, making it perfect for ensuring you’re satisfied and satisfied all morning. I also love adding collagen and green powder!

Superfood smoothie
If you’re looking for a quick and delicious way to stuff all of these nutrients, this superfood smoothie is it. It comes with macros and micronutrients, and we do our best. And here’s the good news: it tastes great! With a creamy Greek yogurt base, sweet blueberries, lush greenery and cozy sprinkles of cinnamon, this could be your new breakfast.
Ingredients 1 cup 1 cup frozen blueberries ½ cup whole milk whole milk 1 cup greek yogurt ½ cup baby spinach ½ cup tuna flax and chia granola
Step 1: Throw everything into the blender.
Step 2: Blend everything until smooth.
Step 3: Pour into your favorite glass or mason jar and top with granola to make a little crunch.
Mint smoothie
Cool, creamy, just the right amount of mint. This smoothie is basically a glass summer. It’s packed with protein, fiber and all sorts of essential nutrients, but honestly, it’s super refreshing. If you have fresh mint grown in your garden, this is the perfect way to use it. Bonus: It gives you a sense of fullness and energy throughout the morning.
Ingredients ¼ cup vanilla greek yogurt ½ cup whole milk 1 frozen banana, 2 slices of chopped mint leaves (and a little extra for garnish)
Step 1: Add all ingredients to the blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Pour into a glass or mason jar.
Step 4: Decorate with extra mint, sprinkles of chocolate chips, or, if it’s flashy, swirls of coconut whipped.
Green Power Smoothie
This green smoothie is one of my favorite ways to sneak up on a handful of greens in the morning. You can’t taste like a glass salad. It is creamy and refreshing, packed with all kinds of healthy goodness, helps digestion, support your skin and makes you feel the best.
Ingredients ½ cup plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup whole milk 1 cup spinach or kale ½ avocado ½ apple or pear, ½ lemon 1 tablespoon hemp seeds chopped juice
Step 1: Throw everything into a fast blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Pour into a glass and sip towards its brilliance!
Strawberry Almond Butter Smoothie
You probably won’t pour milkshake first thing in the morning…but this strawberry smoothie just tastes like it, and it’s actually good for you! It’s creamy and sweet, full of protein, healthy fats and fruits, and helps you kick the day off like nutrition and satisfaction.
Ingredients ¾ cup plain Greek yogurt 1 cup frozen strawberries (or frozen mixed berries)
Step 1: Add all ingredients to the blender.
Step 2: Mix until thick and smooth.
Step 3: Pour into a glass and have fun!
Mango Pineapple Smoothie
I love the mango banana smoothie because the texture is perfect! Like a breakfast sorbet or ice cream. If you love tropical, this is something you should do! This recipe blends juicy pineapple and sweet mangoes, making it a perfect tropical snack for a healthy protein-filled breakfast or snack.
Ingredients 1/2 cup frozen pineapple 1/2 cup frozen mango 1/2 frozen banana 1/3 greek yogurt 1/4 cup orange juice 1 cup whole milk – tropical, non-dairy twist 1 vanilla protein powder powder powder powder powder powder powder can be used with coconut milk for instructions
Step 1: Put everything in the blender.
Step 2: Blend everything until smooth. If it’s too thick, add a splash of milk.
Step 3: Pour into a glass and have fun!
