Most of what we know about GLP-1 centers around beauty-related weight loss and the drug’s effects on the skin and body. However, a new study published in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery suggests that people taking GLP-1 may have fewer postoperative dermatological complications than those not taking the drug. The study looked at people who underwent Mohs surgery and larger incisions for skin cancer removal.

Curious about how GLP-1 users healed after dermatological surgery, and how they did compared to non-users, researchers followed GLP-1 users for one month to assess their risk of postoperative inflammatory complications.

How does GLP-1 help with wound healing?

Along with this study, the authors cited previous research suggesting that the drug suppresses inflammatory molecules in the body and improves tissue repair by promoting skin cell motility and blood vessel formation, leading to an overall improvement in metabolic health. Overall, these factors combine to contribute to accelerated wound healing, the researchers said.

Research conclusion

According to the study authors, compared to non-GLP-1 users, those using the drug had a significantly reduced risk of post-procedural infection due to less “wound breakdown, skin and subcutaneous tissue infections, hematomas, and other complications.” Specifically, patients receiving semaglutide and tirzepatide showed the greatest reduction in complications. “GLP receptor agonists are associated with a significantly reduced risk of postoperative inflammatory complications after dermatologic surgery, supporting their beneficial role in perioperative safety and wound healing.”

Although further research is needed, the results are promising and suggest that GLP-1 patients may have fewer postoperative complications. With further research, these findings may one day have major implications.
