Marisa Coughlan has spent her career proving that she’s never just one person, on-screen or off. Her role as Officer Ursula in Super Troopers became part of a cult comedy phenomenon, so enduring that strangers still scream at her from their cars. Now, more than 20 years after the series first found viewers, she has returned to the role for the third installment. The film will be released in theaters on August 7th and will also star Brian Cox.

But Ursula is just one part of Coughlan’s extensive career. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Southern California, Coughlan has moved fluidly between acting, writing, and producing, most recently appearing in the film Blue Eyed Girl, which she wrote, produced, and starred in. Along the way, she’s shared the screen with Kate Hudson, Matt Bomer, and Liv Tyler, and appeared in series from Boston Legal to Grey’s Anatomy. Off screen, she’s raising four children, none of whom, by her own admission, have yet figured out what self-care looks like.

Ahead of the film’s release and a busy weekend of Comic-Con, we caught up with the star to talk about returning to Ursula, as well as her skincare and wellness essentials to get through long days on set and even longer days at home.

Super Troopers has an incredible cult following that most movies never achieve. When did you realize it was something bigger than a movie?

“As I was walking down the street, people rolled down their windows and yelled, ‘Hey, Charlie’s Angels!’ Ha! It was a slow burn, but when it finally hit, it hit.”

You’ve played this character for over 20 years in three movies. How has she changed, and how have you changed with her?

“Ursula has always been a strong, smart woman, surrounded by guys who are a little bit stupid…and nothing has changed about that. To tell you the truth, Ursula has found her voice more. I think the same can be said for my own journey. I feel more empowered now than I did 20 years ago. And I realize that the worst-case scenario, frankly, is usually not that bad. The positives are usually worth it.”

You graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California. You write, produce, and perform. You clearly don’t fit into a single mold. Has the industry caught up or is it still fighting to be seen as more than one entity?

“It’s hard to wear multiple hats because this industry loves to put people into categories and keep them there. I went from being an actor to being a screenwriter, and people forgot that I was an actor…and then when I went back to acting, they forgot that I was a writer too. I needed to produce something that combined everything to prove that I could do it all at the same time.”

You have four children and a very full and creative life. What should I keep in mind to make time for myself?

“Can you define self-care? I don’t really know! But to be honest, it’s really hard because I’m a doer and I start moving from the moment I wake up in the morning. Sometimes I get lost and realize I haven’t been sitting all day or eaten a proper meal. I think most moms can relate to this!”

After a long day on set, what are your go-to beauty products for skin care, hair care, wellness, etc.?

“After four pregnancies, I’m pretty cautious about products and their ingredients. I love a skincare line called Evanhealy. It’s completely organic, smells great, and is effective in my opinion. I take a lot of vitamin gummies because they’re a good excuse to eat candy. Gruns gummies and Create creatine gummies are my favorites. I love Athletic I love Greens and I also use Armra’s Colostrum, which has a watermelon flavor. When it comes to makeup, I love Molly Sims’ YISE line, which is very natural and I think she looks great.
