About identity, gratitude, and the gift of oranges

About identity, gratitude, and the gift of oranges

We’ve put together a quick guide to help you live a more mindful and meaningful life. There’s something that’s been capturing my heart and mind lately.

I am extremely grateful to Sam Harris and his team for creating the Waking Up meditation app.

As a generous gesture, we have provided 50 free 3-month subscriptions to the Mindfulness Exercise Community. Waking Up is one of my favorite apps, offering deep teachings and practices that help us better understand who we really are. It’s a great resource for those who want to learn more.

What I’m thinking about: Different versions of you.

I came across a powerful observation that still sticks with me.

You are a different person than everyone you meet. For some, you’re quiet. You never stop talking to other people. Some people remember your kindness, others remember when you left. You are the villain in one person’s story, but the hero in another. And for most people, you are just a passing thought.

The truth is that you do not exist as a single person, but as countless selves formed by fleeting moments and personal perceptions. You’ll never be able to hear your own laughter like others. You never know how your absence will leave a room once filled.

To me, you are just you. But for others, you are thousands of different stories, none of which you can read.

This is not a call to anxiety, but to humility and grace. It reminds me that my story is not the only one, and that everyone is the protagonist in their own complex story.

What I’m looking forward to: Upcoming workshops and retreats

What I do: Receive life as a gift.

My current practice is to feel that life is a precious gift that I neither created nor earned.

When you remember this, even the smallest things become precious, like clean water from your faucet, your daughter’s laughter, or the morning light moving into your room.

From this place, I seek to open my senses and heart more fully to what is already here. It is a gentle reminder that life is not something to be rushed through or controlled, but rather to be received moment by moment with gratitude and wonder.

My favorite poem: “The Orange” by Wendy Cope

This poem perfectly captures the essence of finding deep peace in ordinary moments.

the orange

I bought a large orange during my lunch break.

Its size made us all laugh.

I stripped it down and shared it with Robert and Dave.

They were given a quarter and I was given a half.

And the orange was very happy,

As is often the case

Just recently. shopping. A walk in the park.

This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was pretty easy.

I have done all the tasks on the list.

And I enjoyed them and spent some time with them.

I love you. I’m glad it exists.

— Wendy Cope

May your week be filled with moments that make you feel glad you exist.
