Can Ozempic really help you age backwards? Scientists believe the answer could be yes

Can Ozempic really help you age backwards? Scientists believe the answer could be yes

It’s official: we’re completely in the Ozempic era. Once a new concept in scientific research, GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Mounjaro have transcended their original use in diabetes management and become the required tool for weight loss. As researchers reveal more about the capabilities of GLP-1 drugs, a new study published in MedRXIV reveals promising evidence that Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs may also offer significant anti-aging benefits.

How Semaglutide helps slow aging

While a new study in MEDRXIV is not the first to investigate the effects of GLP-1 on aging, the publication’s findings are primarily built on what we know about ozempic and anti-aging, and found that this drug could reverse your biological age for about three years. To test the effect of Semaglutide on biological age, the study scientists found that 108 people with HIV-related fat hypertrophy conducted a 32-week controlled trial, with half of the patients receiving Ozempic treatment and the other half receiving a placebo. Scientists then analyzed what they called “epigenetic clocks” and confirmed whether there were significant chemical changes that changed with age within the test patient.

The results of this study are not entirely surprising to many, but were exciting for most. “Semaglutide not only slows down the rate of aging, but may partially reverse it in some individuals,” Varun Dwaraka, director of bioinformatics at Trudiagnostic and lead author of the study, told a new scientist. “Semaglutide people were on average biologically younger by the end of the study.” The findings are promising, but as MedRXIV studies have not yet been peer-reviewed, we have yet to see any real meaning as to how GLP-1 affects biological aging among patients with HIV-related steatosis.
