“The strength of the feathers is a faint, airy fringe that blends in seamlessly with the rest of the haircut,” Plain says. “It gives a soft, light, natural and easy feel.” Celebrity hairstylist Johnny Lavoy says feathered bangs are often angled and layered to gently frame the face. Their soft, faint nature mimics feathers, so their names are mimicked.
Why are feathered bangs back?
Feathered bangs were in their prime in the 70s, so why did they change all of the sudden starring roles? There seem to be a number of factors in the play. Plain believes his feathered bangs are making a comeback. “Female bangs provide that subtle structure without feeling heavy.”
Lavoy points out that feather bangs are a great way to upgrade curtain bangs, which have been trending for a while. They also “a great way to move to a new look without making big chops,” he adds. Additionally, Labrecque states, “They are extremely tolerant, helping to hide their age, and are multipurpose.”
What should you look for at a salon to show off your feather bangs?
Veteran stylists need to know what you mean when seeking feather bangs, but experts say bringing reference photos is always a good idea, as “hair vocabulary is different.” Plain recommends finding photos featuring people with similar hair types and face shapes. “A good way to explain feather strength is to be a lighter version of the curtain bang with a short, wise piece that starts in the middle of the forehead,” says Lavoy.
You need to customize the cut. It will be awarded to a stylist for the length and bloating that will be your most flattering experience. Labrecque adds that it is also important to ensure a hairline that is suitable for your appearance. “It’s about adjusting it to your texture and your daily styling routine,” says Plain.
Who should consider feather bangs?
According to Plain, feather bangs work for most people. “They’re great for people who are trying to soften their traits, add volume, or take more shapes with the cut. Whether your hair is fine or thick, you can customize it to enhance your appearance,” he says.
Feathered bangs work in most face shapes, but Lavoy points out that it is a particularly great way to balance and soften your wide forehead. Labrecque recommends cutting for people with long, rectangular or oval faces. Additionally, feathered bangs are “perfect for those who wear hair frequently but want a flirty face frame for softness,” says Lavoy.
How to style feather bangs
It’s all a favorite. “Feather bangs can be very versatile. They can be long or short. You can style them on the sides or in the middle, making them refined or enormous depending on the atmosphere,” says Lavoy. “Don’t undo it, air dry for a natural texture, or use a round brush and blow dryer for a more refined and resilient finish. It’s low maintenance, but very versatile,” says Plain.
Finding the right styling product is important. If you want a more fulfilling look, Lavoy recommends using a voluminous product. He likes to use the coloured Xtra big bomb volumeizer ($26), but Labrecque recommends the Paul Labrecque volume style ($28). Once the selected product is applied, blow dry hair with a round brush. “Choose the size according to the length of your hair and the amount of bounce you need. My favorite round brush is the Olivia Garden XL Round Thermal Brush ($30),” says Lavoy. “Blow the sides and center for the best results. For extra hold and volume, you can also use a curling iron.” If the refined look is yours, Lavoy recommends opting for a larger brush paired with a smooth product like the Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray ($72).
