If you’re looking for a recipe for chocolate protein powder smoothie, these ideas offer several options for pairing with chocolate protein, from avocado to peanut butter!
Everything made with chocolate feels more like dessert than breakfast. Especially for those who crave sweets in the morning. That’s why I insisted on sharing my favorite healthy chocolate recipes with you. In this case, your smoothie can be truly sweet and healthy.
It’s no secret that I love smoothie recipes, especially in the summer. They are nutritious, convenient and easy to customize to suit a variety of ingredients and goals. We talked about my Siab (a smoothie in a bowl), which is superfood smoothies, mint smoothies, and one of my favorite ways to enjoy smoothies. And while adults prefer green smoothies, kids love chocolate the most!
Rather than using cocoa or chocolate syrup, the easiest way to add chocolate flavors and protein is to use high-quality protein powders. It’s not innovative, but it’s definitely tasty. This helps you achieve your protein goals while supporting your health. This is why these recipes deserve a spot for smoothie rotation. They will hit that sweet spot (literally) while they keep up with your protein, fat and fiber. Continue reading the recipe.
Chocolate Protein Powder Smoothie Recipe
Today’s post has a lot of information, including ingredient combos, the best way to make chocolate protein smoothies (smooth and creamy, thick and chal-free!), and of course recipes to enjoy the smoothie right away.
How to make a chocolate protein smoothie
Choose a quality protein powder.
Chocolate protein powder is basically the star of the show when it comes to smoothies. So you want to make sure you’re using something good! I always recommend choosing a high quality protein powder with minimal ingredients, a chalky aftertaste, and strange ingredients.
Two of my favorite protein powders for smoothies are simply Tera and Ancient Nutrition Whey (I’ll win $10 for my link). They are both a great company dedicated to simple ingredients you recognize and animal welfare (both using grass-fed whey), quality and transparency, both of which are great choices. I like whey protein for its creamy taste and high quality animal protein, but if you have your favorite plant-based protein powder with a lovely chocolate flavor, feel free to use it!
Do not skip creamy ingredients.
The biggest part about any smoothie is how creamy and satisfying it is. But make sure you use the right base to achieve that! Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nut butter, or even small avocados are great options with extra nutrients and healthy fats.
As I explained in my post about smoothies for kids, I love the rise of Vitamix to blend smoothies with perfect creamy consistency! (No complaints from magenta or birch that will surprise the mass of smoothie!)
Throw the frozen bananas for thickness.
If you’re someone who likes their smoothies really thick and creamy, don’t skip frozen bananas. This is a dairy-free alternative that is also high in potassium, fiber and antioxidants. Additionally, bananas tend to play nicely in a variety of flavors, including peanut butter, chocolate, and fruit.
Go easily on the liquid.
Most chocolate protein smoothie recipes require small liquids such as regular dairy products or your favorite nut milk to help loosen the thickness. You don’t want to jump in and add it right away, so it could end up being chocolate protein milk. Start small – if it’s too thick you can always add it.

Coffee protein shake
This glass blend treatment is for everyone who loves a balanced blend of Java and protein. I wasn’t the biggest fan of iced coffee outside of summer (hahaha!) until this smoothie rekindled my love for it. This is my favorite way to run out of remaining iced coffee in the pot. I love it because of the rich coffee milkshake flavor, but 20-30 grams of protein is also great. It’s the perfect all-in-one energy drink.
Ingredients 1 scoop chocolate protein powder 1/2 cup ice cube made from brewed coffee (or use cold coffee + regular ice to save time!) 2/3 cup whole milk (or make plant-based almond milk)
Optional: Add chia seeds, whipped toppings, or cinnamon sprinkles on top.
Instructions
Step 1: First, make a coffee ice cube. Brew a powerful coffee, let it cool, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. (You can also save steps using iced coffee and regular ice!)
Step 2: Add all the ingredients to the blender.
Step 3: Blend everything at high speed until it’s smooth and creamy. This only takes about 1-2 minutes.
Step 4: If it’s too thick, add more milk until you reach the desired consistency.
Step 5: Pour into your favorite glass, take a sip and enjoy the coffee meat moment.
Chocolate cookie protein smoothie
I love having smoothies as a whole meal or as a treat after workout, but at other times all I want is a smoothies like a simple snack. I shared this vanilla cookie smoothie recipe a few years ago, and since then I’ve played around with different flavors to see what I can do. I usually see myself as a vanilla girl, but when chocolate cravings hit, this is just a simple chocolate thing!
Ingredients ½ banana (frozen) 1 tablespoon 1 cup almond butter Your choice 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Power Instructions
Step 1: Throw all the ingredients into the blender.
Step 2: Blend high until everything is smooth and creamy.
Step 3: If the smoothie is not in the desired consistency, add some additional ice cubes and blend again.
Step 4: Pour into a glass and have fun. It’s that easy!
Chocolate banana protein smoothie
For thick monkey lovers! This smoothie is very creamy, chocolatey and naturally sweet thanks to the bananas. It’s basically like a dessert, but it’s nutritious and adds sugar. Bananas add hints of its silky texture and sweetness, but the protein keeps you fully and energetic. If you want a fiber or carb boost before your workout, it’s a good one.
Ingredients 1 scoop chocolate protein powder 1 frozen banana ¾ cup milk ½ cup Greek yogurt
Step 1: Throw everything into the blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: If you prefer a richer one, add some ice cubes and blend again.
Step 4: Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!
Chocolate avocado protein smoothie
Don’t avocado scare you. All of this smoothie is creamy and has zero avocado flavor and chocolate. It is rich, silky smooth and packed with healthy fats and proteins to fill and satisfy you. The avocado makes it even richer and creamier, giving the smoothie a slightly nutritional upgrade with fiber and heart-healthy fat. Don’t tell the boys. But this is still my favorite way to run out of good avocados, but it’s a bit too brown to eat with a fork.
Ingredients 1 scoop chocolate protein powder ½ avocado ¾ cup 1 tablespoon milk 1 tablespoon almond butter ½ TBSP cocoa powder (optional but with chocolate richness) Thicken some ice cubes.
Step 1: Add everything to the blend and blend high until smooth and creamy.
Step 2: Pour into a glass and enjoy all the chocolate bites!
Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie
People who don’t like PB + Chocolate combos. This chocolate peanut butter blend is rich, chocolate and creamy, with its perfect salty taste and sweet peanut butter kick. Bananas add a natural sweetness, and protein and healthy fats will keep you full and healthy. This is one of my favorite ways to sneak in some extra nutrients and feel like having a milkshake.
Ingredients 1 scoop chocolate protein powder 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter 1 frozen banana (for creaminess and natural sweetness) ¾ cup milk ½ cup Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon chia seeds or flaxseed ice cube (optional, for thicker texture)
Step 1: Throw everything into the blender.
Step 2: Blend until smooth and creamy.
Step 3: Enjoy a little taste. If it’s too thick, add more milk, or if it’s cold, add a few cubes with ice.
Step 4: Pour into a glass and enjoy the rich, chocolatey peanut butter benefits!
Despicable Vegetable Chocolate Green Protein Smoothie
This is my little secret that sneaks into the greenery on my day without sacrificing the chocolate flavor I crave. Cocoa and protein powder do a great job of masking vegetables, so it still tastes like a rich, creamy chocolate shake. You wouldn’t expect spinach, kale or even zucchini hidden there! (It’s so chocolatey, your kids will love it – guaranteed!)
Ingredients 1 scoop chocolate protein powder 1 cup spinach or kale 3/4 cup frozen banana 1 tablespoon almond milk or oat milk 1 tablespoon chia seeds or hemp seeds 1 cup zucchini (fresh or frozen to avoid green color)
Step 1: Add all ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.
Step 2: Pour into your favorite glass and enjoy!
Chocolate cherry dough boy smoothie
If you’ve never made a smoothie bowl with fresh cherries and chocolate, this is the sign for making a chocolate cherry dough smoothie! Cherry season is short and sweet, so I love making the most of it in this rich, chocolatey dessert-like smoothie bowl. It’s packed with protein, oats and all the good stuff to fill you up. It feels more like a snack than a balanced meal.
Ingredients 10 Fresh Cherries (Pits) 1/3 cup Rolled Oats 1/3 cup Plain yogurt ½ cup Milk ½ banana 1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder Instructions
Step 1: Before you do anything, first take out the cherry pit! I just broke each one and they came out quickly. If you follow this method, make sure to wear proper splatterproof clothes!
Step 2: Add everything to the blender, mix together and let cool overnight (or at least a few hours).
Step 3: Blend quickly until it’s smooth in the morning.
Step 4: Pour into a bowl and add your favorite toppings (granola, extra cherry, cocoa nibs, give it a name) and enjoy!
