Is regular flan suitable for keto?
My father is from Sicily, and his mother, Nonna, used to make flan from a young age. Of course, it’s loaded with regular sugar, so it’s high in carbohydrates, not keto-friendly, and will definitely raise your blood sugar levels.
However, using low carb sweeteners, making keto low carb flan was a very easy task. This recipe was highly praised by my father, but he didn’t even realize it was made with coconut.
It is a popular dessert among Italians, Spaniards, and Mexicans. Mexican flan is actually a simple custard mixture with caramel sauce (basically caramelized sugar) that oozes out onto the top of the flan when you invert it on a plate.
Usually made with dairy products, this time it’s made with coconut milk, giving it a creamy texture and a slight coconut flavor.
Does the idea of making flan seem too boring, too fancy, or just too much work to you? With a great foolproof recipe, it’s not difficult at all.
With this recipe, you don’t have to worry about whether the flan will look good or not. You can easily achieve that.

Is crème caramel the same as flan?
Yes, crème caramel or caramel cream and flan are basically the same thing. Crème caramel or flan is originally a French name, but it is known as flan in Spanish-speaking countries and the United States.
Are crème brûlée and flan the same thing?
Creme brûlée is not the same as flan. The creme brûlée is topped with hard caramel, and the flan is topped with soft caramel.
sugar-free caramel sauce
The caramel sauce uses monk fruit allulose blend brown sugar and butter, but to make it dairy-free, just use coconut oil in place of butter.
My kids and husband loved this dessert! My youngest actually doesn’t even like coconut, but there was so little coconut flavor that he even asked for a second one.

In a stand mixer, mix eggs, egg yolks, coconut milk, vanilla extract, and stevia until well combined. Let’s set it aside.
Add the caramel sauce ingredients to a small saucepan over medium-low heat and stir until bubbles form around the edges.
Simmer for 1 minute and pour into a 10-inch pie plate, cake pan, or 10 individual ramekins. Swirl to cover the bottom of the dish. Let the sauce cool for 1 to 2 minutes, then pour the custard mixture over the caramel sauce.
Place the pie plate in a large roasting pan and place in the oven. Pour 2 cups of boiling water into the bottom of a large roasting pan, making sure the water comes 1 to 2 inches above the sides of the pie plate.
Bake for 1 hour or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Cool to room temperature and refrigerate for 2 hours or overnight. When ready to serve, loosen the edges with a knife and invert onto a large plate.
If you are using erythritol sweetener, it may crystallize in the refrigerator. If this happens after flipping the flan onto a plate, simply remove the crystallized parts of the can from the caramel sauce. Serve or refrigerate until ready to serve.
Tools to make keto coconut flan
10-inch pie plate – If you have a smaller pie plate, this flan recipe will fill you up. Use the 10-inch and you’re all set.
Small Saucepan – Use as a double boiler or just to make a simple sauce like the topping in this flan recipe.
Roasting Pan – You’ll need a large turkey roasting pan to bake any type of cheesecake or, for this recipe, to evenly cook the flan over a double boiler.

How to replace sugar substitutes
There are many keto sweeteners on the market today, but I try to use all natural sweeteners in my recipes. Monk fruit sweetener is a great option, as is allulose.
Allulose produces less sweetness than stevia or monk fruit. Please note that you may need more of these sweeteners or a combination of two sweeteners to get this Keto Creme Caramel to your desired sweetness.
Use my sweetener guide and conversion table to determine how much to use when swapping out sweeteners in my original recipe.
Keto Dairy Free Coconut Flan
This isn’t your typical weeknight kind of dessert, but it’s a great indulgence to surprise non-low-carb guests at a party.
How to store low-carb furan
Leftover flan can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

FAQ
Can I make it with whole milk instead of coconut cream?
Yes, it is possible with the same amount I used.
Can I use fresh cream instead of coconut milk?
Yes, you can use the same amount of heavy cream as you used coconut milk.
Can I replace coconut milk with unsweetened almond milk?
No, I would not use it as a substitute for almond milk. Almond milk doesn’t have as much fat as coconut milk or whole milk, so it doesn’t have the right texture for this creamy dessert.
Can I replace sugar-free sweetener with blackstrap molasses or maple syrup?
You can use any sweetener you like, but if you’re trying to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet, or if you’re trying to consume low-carb or ketogenic foods, both molasses and maple syrup can cause a spike in blood sugar levels, leading to cravings.
Can I make this creamy keto flan recipe in ramekins instead of a large baking dish?
of course! If you want to make this elegant dessert individually, you can use 10-8 oz ramekins. Follow the directions for making the custard and sweet caramel syrup, but add it to the greased and prepared ramekins.
We also recommend placing all ramekins on a large baking sheet and in boiling water and letting them bake slowly and evenly over a bain-marie for best results.
