Fabric dyeing for beginners

Do you want to create your own colorful cotton fabrics for quilting and sewing, or do you want to start a small hand-dyed fabric business?
This ebook shows you exactly how to dye cotton fabrics at home using MX dyes (the same ones used for ties) and everyday supplies.
I have been teaching fabric dyes for many years selling hand-dyed fabrics, hand-dyed for quilting and sewing, and running a successful online shop, and have written these instructions for hand-dyed cotton fabrics at home.

The dyes used are MX dyes (also known as Procion MX dyes or MX reactive dyes or Thai dyes). Unlike plant-based dyes that produce more muted colors, MX dyes can create countless colors and values in spotted and solid textures.

I’ve created beautiful fabrics with countless colors and values (gradations), including all the tips, tricks and recipes.
I love these fabrics for creating all sorts of sewing projects, as I can make the exact thing I imagine.
I also really prefer to use unprinted fabrics. Just as I love browsing fabric shops, the options are overwhelming. By sticking to my own hand-dyed fabric, I have endless possibilities without using other people’s art.
In this next image, you will see half of the rainbow, ruby throat hummingbird, dragonfly and cornflower used in log cabin blocks.

I don’t like wasting my product (or money), so I refined my approach to get the most out of the smallest amount of dye.
It’s the perfect way to get the exact fabric you need for your project.

About e-books

This ebook is a beginner’s guide to dyeing cotton fabrics using MX dyes. It is designed to showcase the process so that you can confidently create your own custom fabric after one dye session.
When I first learned to dye fabrics, the best available resource was an overly complex book. So I started experimenting and gradually came up with my own preferred method, and got beautiful and consistent results that I could easily replicate.
I dyed so many fabrics that I eventually opened an online shop, sold at craft fairs, wholesaleed to quilt shops, and started teaching others how to dye fabrics.
This guide shares everything I’ve learned along the way, providing clear steps, practical tips and realistic advice on creating gorgeous fabrics.
Here’s what I show you how to do:
Use common household items to set up a safe and functional dyeing space in your home. Both spots and solid fabrics of all colours are dyed, including rainbow colors, subtle blends, and rustic neutrals. Mix your own colors to adapt your dye recipes. Use up the remaining dye in a fun way like sky painting. Troubleshooting common issues (and avoiding them in the first place). Track your fabric so you can reproduce your favorite results.
Why do I like this method:
It’s for beginners and has clear step-by-step instructions. It uses minimal pigment powder, making it cost-effective and has minimal waste. You can create pieces of your favorite size, from just a small portion of your yard to one or two yards. No extras like salt or urea are needed.
This is not a chemistry lesson or a deep dive into art theory. It is also a practical guide for enthusiasts to create beautiful collections of custom-dyed fabrics.
Content includes
An overview of this simple dyeing method to show you the detailed steps of the Health and Safety Tips Supply List (Don’t worry – It’s cheap) (Don’t worry) As an example of other creative techniques walking through the creation of beautiful rainbows of colors, you will run out of recipes of 17 remaining dyes to adjust using different rainbows, 3-color recipes to create different rainbows, 2- and 3-color blends, 3-color recipes.
