Daniel Campbell is new to the spotlight, but her latest role on the waterfront feels like a revelation. Scream and Dawson’s Creek creator Kevin Williamson’s new Netflix series has been stable in the top ten streamers since its premiere last month, drawing viewers into a rough Southern world where family loyalty is a steep price. Opposite Maria Bello and Melissa Benoist, Campbell plays a young woman captured between duty and identity in what feels like her most layered role. For fans who first fell in love with her during her Disney Channel days, this is all grown-up stars, grounded more than ever, more complicated and seductive.
Besides its success, what excites you most about this show?
I can’t wait for everyone to meet Buckley. On the surface it is elegant and beautiful, but beneath it is this constant tension simmering. It’s a show about what people want to do to protect their strength, image and legacy, and how vulnerable they are. There is something memorable and fascinating about that mix. From the first script I was drawn into the web of relationships and the strength of the women in the story.
How is this project different than anything else you did?
My character, Payton Buckley, was very rewarding to explore. She is a calculation, but deeply human, someone who has learned to adapt to a world built on image, power and manipulation. She has power, which slowly reveals herself. This role challenged us to communicate through such gifts for the actors, subtext, tranquility, and subtle changes.
Do you think it’s difficult to shake up “Disney Persona”?
You know, I feel like I don’t need to shake anything! I am extremely grateful to filming Disney and Star Truck. It gave me such a strong foundation and introduced me to a generation of fans who have grown with me over the years. I never consider it to be something to shake off, but as a stepping stone that helps shape me. When I grew up, as a person and an actor, I was really fortunate to be able to challenge me in new ways and take on roles that reflect my creative place for now. I love how much support I’ve been with that evolution and keeping the story expanding is exciting!
Are there any beauty products you loved and used forever?
Something about me… I love beauty. I’m always trying new skin/hair/makeup. But wherever I am, wherever I am, there are some staples that have become part of my ritual. The soft nude Dior lip gloss ($42) is always included in my bag. It gives its perfect kissing shade! I used Chanel Les Beige water fresh shades ($70) for years. It is one of the few products that make your skin look like skin. Don’t miss out on sunscreen! La Mer’s Broad Spectrum SPF 50 UV Protection Liquid ($125) is amazing. Although expensive, I can wear it alone or blend it with anything. I grew up watching my mom use it and now it’s one of the things I really invest in. And I always go back to YSL’s Touchééclat ($40) and on long shoot days it’s under the eyes magic. Recently I have also reached out to Westman Atelier’s Baby Cheeks Stick in Dou ($48). The easiest flash!
What is your skincare routine one day after the shoot?
After a day of set, my focus is always on replenishing my skin. I like a gentle double cleansing and love using the Elemis Collagen Pro Cleansing Balm ($40). Then, tone it and rebalance and peel it off with a biological Rechherche P50 ($95). It’s the Holy Grail for me. Layer hydration with Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum ($325) and then seal everything with Augustinus Bader’s The Cream ($305) or La Mer’s Soft Serum ($200) depending on what your skin needs.
Are there any health and beauty spots in LA that you love?
My girlfriend and I actually have a “favorite thing” party. There, everyone brings and shares what is obsessed with the month. So I will definitely bring this question to the group! For me, I can’t negotiate monthly facials. They let my skin glow and give me time to reset. I try to wear a sheet mask once a week. I was just in Korea and I love how seriously they take mask games. I love brands like 111skin, Medicube, and Biodance. I’m also a huge fan of lymphatic drainage and infrared saunas at the place of treatment, pauses, or friends’ houses where I sit and chat while I’m sweating. And honestly, some of my favorite wellness habits are the easiest. Get through good training, hit the beach, read, hike.
What are you looking forward to this summer?
This summer will make you feel special. There are many exciting things, both personally and professionally. I look forward to seeing incredible trips, celebrations with people I love, and immersing myself in these summer moments. And I’m very excited. It was a very meaningful project for me and I look forward to seeing people finally dive into this world we have built.
