Garden Checklist for September: Tasks and DIY Projects

Garden Checklist for September: Tasks and DIY Projects

Autumn marks time in the garden for the ending and new beginnings. Garden work in September includes harvesting summer crops, growing autumn vegetables, and preparing for winter gardens.

There is also a year-round glass garden checklist for a convenient overview.

Garden work in September

Here in southwestern Ontario, Canada, September is a turning point and a long farewell to summer. Autumn is in the air.

Summer perennials are turning into species. The leaves begin to change color. Wildlife will begin preparing for the upcoming winter. As summer and winter gradually trade off, there are hot and cold days.

When I was a kid, autumn marked time to close our garden until spring. It also marks the beginning recently, as we know that we can continue to grow food throughout the cold season.

The best thing you can do for a fall garden is to leave the “confusion” intact. From the growth of all old plants from perennials of summer flowers, autumn leaves, decomposition branches, etc., it is an important food and habitat for all living things in our gardens and environments, unless they are abnormally ill, invasive, or stained with pests. Most animals, including birds, bees, butterflies, insects and mammals, live among us all year round. They need something like this to live. We need them for survival.

Depending on the weather, you may perform these tasks in September or October. As summer keeps pushing, I hold back. If it’s cool, damp, early autumn, I’ll go ahead and get something done.

Please observe and enjoy

You may not know it by the name of phenology, but you certainly know what it is. Phenology is the science of observing the first annual event in nature. When the flower buds open. When Peeper first peeps. When bees appear. When the relocation arrives. When the light bulb pops up. The list is endless.

Seasonal changes stimulate natural responses in the kingdom of plants and animals. It is interesting to note these events and compare them year by year.

Fall phenology event

Here are some examples you may notice.

The wood changes color. The bird feeder may be very active as it is preparing for winter. Migratory birds and butterflies may pass through your garden. Flowering plants produce seeds. Squirrels and chipmunks increase food stashes. A foggy morning. It’s like a frost prelude.
