Want to jazz up your pillows and linens or fill your room with the soothing scent of lavender? Learn how to make a lavender spray to promote restful sleep and wake up feeling calm and refreshed.
One of the new additions to our garden this summer is lavender. When I lived in California, I had lavender growing in my yard and it was amazing, but here in Minnesota, perennial lavender never survives. However, I took the plunge and planted annual lavender, which is doing great. I’m harvesting and drying it to use in lavender sprays and edible lavender.
I have so much that I now officially have lavender spray in every room. As I was spraying my daughter’s pillow before bed, she asked me what I was doing. I explained that it was a lavender sleep spray to help her sleep better. I gave my daughter a sniff from the bottle and she immediately yawned. It’s not a scientific study, but it clearly worked for my daughter.
This lavender pillow spray is easy to make with just 3 or 4 simple ingredients. Let’s get started…
What is lavender spray?
So what is a lavender room spray? It’s basically an aromatherapy spray that uses lavender essential oil (+ dried lavender leaves, if you want!) to fill your home with a fresh scent and promote restful sleep. The scent of lavender has been shown to improve the quality of your sleep and make you feel refreshed when you wake up (source). This lavender spray can be used as a pillow spray, room spray, or body spray.
Materials needed
Witch Hazel – This helps mix the water with the essential oils. Otherwise, the essential oils will degrade over time and the scent will not last as long. Ideally, you’ll want to use pure witch hazel like this. Distilled Water – Ideally, use distilled water as it tends to last longer. Lavender Essential Oil – Use pure lavender essential oil. Add more or less (about 20 drops) depending on the scent you prefer. Optional: Dried Lavender – I have lots of dried lavender in my garden so I like to add it for visual effect and the deliciousness of lavender. This is completely optional though.

FAQ
For the most effective spray, spray directly onto pillows and linens as this room spray adheres well to fabrics for best results, however you can also spray directly onto your body, clothes or in the room.
Technically, you could also use rubbing alcohol or high-concentration vodka instead of witch hazel. I like to use witch hazel, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand.
No! I like to add it for visual effect, but the scent addition is minimal – lavender essential oil alone gives a strong lavender scent.
Storage Method
Lavender spray can be stored for up to 6 months, sometimes even longer, but I expect the scent will start to fade after a few months.

Fill the bottle halfway with witch hazel. Fill the rest of the bottle almost full with distilled water (leaving a little space for the essential oil). Add 15-30 drops of lavender essential oil. Start with 15 drops and add more until you reach your desired scent level. Shake well. Add 1-2 lavender sprigs, if desired. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

This recipe scales depending on the size of your spray bottle so no specific amounts are given – see instructions for ratios.
