Every year I bake ham for Easter. And every year it’s such a hassle. It’s not because baking a ham is difficult, it actually doesn’t get any easier. But a recurring problem is that the ham is never ready when it’s supposed to be ready.

After hours of cooking, the ham becomes dry, but somehow still cold in the center. Part of the problem is that the oven temperature is always lower than expected. But I talked to friends who had the same experience.

I own an Instant Pot, so I’ve left those issues in the past. This simple ham recipe takes all the guesswork out of the oven. A tender and juicy ham is not only possible, but very easy to achieve.

🧐 Why this recipe works

Instant Pot Ham is easy and perfect every time! Prosciutto ham can be eaten in about 30 minutes. Leftover ham can be frozen and is perfect for making grilled cheese or ham sandwiches. Ham made in a pressure cooker is tender, juicy, and has great flavor!

🔖 Materials and Substitutes

Ham: This recipe uses 6 pounds of spiral-cut bone-in ham. You can also use whole or half ham. Just check to see if it will fit inside your Instant Pot. If you have a larger Instant Pot and can fit a larger ham, you will need to adjust the cooking time by adding 2 minutes for each additional pound. Soup: I usually use chicken broth, but you can also use beef or vegetable broth. Wine: Any white wine as long as it’s not too sweet. You can also substitute cooking sherry.

🍖 How to make Instant Pot Ham

Step 1: Mix the wine and soup and pour into the Instant Pot. Place a trivet in the Instant Pot and place the spiral-cut ham on top (flat side down).

Pro tip: If you like, you can remove a few slices from the flat side of the ham to fit in the Instant Pot.

Step 2: Seal the Instant Pot by adding the lid and turning the valve to the sealing position. Select high pressure and adjust cook time to 2 minutes per pound, or 12 minutes for a 6-pound ham.

Step 3: Once the cooking time is complete, let the ham rest for 5 minutes, then immediately remove your hands to release any remaining pressure.

🤷🏻‍♀️ Recipe FAQ

How long does it take to cook ham in the Instant Pot?

Spiral ham is already cooked, so you’re essentially reheating it in the Instant Pot. First, let the ham come to room temperature for a few hours.

Two minutes per pound is the sweet spot. This means you need to cook a 6 pound ham for 12 minutes (not counting the 10 minutes to bring the Instant Pot to pressure and the 5 minutes to let it naturally release pressure).

What size ham fits in the Instant Pot?

An important thing to keep in mind when purchasing a ham is the size of your Instant Pot. I have a 6 quart Instant Pot and can barely fit 6 pounds of ham in it.

👩🏼‍🍳Pro Tips

Remember to remove the plastic bone guard on the bottom of the ham before cooking it. I’m not speaking from experience. Reserve the ham bone to make ham and bean soup. Serve with honey mustard sauce on the side for your guests to enjoy topped with prosciutto (low carb), Dijon mustard, or honey mustard sauce. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze in freezer bags for longer storage. Try the double smoked ham with pomegranate glaze. This is incredibly delicious.

Glazed ham vs unglazed ham

The internet is full of recipes for sweet, sweet glazed ham. I’m wondering, is my family the only one who prefers plain unglazed ham?

As much as I prefer the taste of plain ham, I find that I can do so much more with leftovers. Ham and split pea soup, grilled ham and cheese sandwich, and ham and egg to name a few.

However, if you prefer to use the glaze pack that comes with the ham, be my guest! Just prepare the glaze while the ham is in the Instant Pot. Then pour the glaze over the cooked ham and bake in a hot oven for a few minutes to caramelize.
