June Garden Checklist: Tasks and DIY Projects

June Garden Checklist: Tasks and DIY Projects

June is a busy time for gardeners with cold weather. Summer is here and it’s time to plant, create and visit other gardens for inspiration.

Check out this month’s ideas.

June Garden Task

June can be hot and dry in southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is the longest daylight and short night summer solstice month around June 20th or 21st. Our gardens are beginning to flourish and it’s garden tour season. Perfect for grabs fresh ideas.

Creative projects

June is a very busy time for me. If you don’t work in the garden, you visit the garden. It’s a great, but fast-paced month.

This is the idea for the project.

If you are scrutinizing the sale of yards for supplies, this is the checklist I use.

If you want to enjoy sewing, you can make a cultivation bag and a lovely garden apron.

Please observe and enjoy

You may not know it by the name of phenology, but you certainly know what it is. Phenology is the science of observing the first annual event in nature. When the flower buds open. When Peeper first peeps. When bees appear. When the relocation arrives. When the light bulb pops up. The list is endless.

Seasonal changes stimulate natural responses in the kingdom of plants and animals. It is interesting to note these events and compare them year by year. I write them down on a Google Calendar dedicated to phenology.

There is a great example of this book, Phenology, by Teresa Crimins.

Summer Biological Event

Here are some examples you may notice.

Late May or early June means frog and toad mating time. These nighttime phone calls seem deafening (but productive)! The leaves are out! Early blooming plants show off. Probably a peak bug month. Butterflies, bees and other pollinators collect nectar and pollen. The fireflies are flashing at night. The monarch lays eggs. The baby bird is running away. I’m ready to leave the nest. And there are more hina! The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year.
