Life after our working day

Life after our working day

How can we utilize the energy of autumn?

When the calendar turns to September, a new wind seems to be blowing. It doesn’t smell like a beach or coconut iced drink. Rather, it smells like school bus exhaust, the kind of smell that fills up your calendar in no time. So we take a deep breath of autumn, roll up our sleeves, and get to work. School paperwork and calendar entries will quickly lead to an early start on your Christmas checklist.

It’s very tempting to channel all of your summer energy into the work you need to do in the fall. But the problem with this is that autumn is not the season of sunshine. Autumn is the season of shade.

The refreshing motivation that fall brings doesn’t just apply to your Christmas list. It aims to bring us curiosity and newness.

Autumn’s return to normalcy is not meant to contain or discipline us. It exists to comfort us and provide us with more stable and consistent energy. (It counters the ups and downs of summer.)

Cooler weather wipes away the grogginess of summer and gives us clarity of thought. But what do we do with that clarity? Let’s put that power to good use! Use it to see this moment clearly. Go for an evening walk and notice how comfortable your clothes are when you’re not drenched in sweat. Let’s stop looking back at other people’s vacations this summer and look clearly and appreciate the simple happiness that apples and pumpkins and campfires bring us.

Make the most of the fall shade.

Until next time,

Laura
