Search for a low-maintenance garden: Views of Xeriscapes in Central Texas

Everyone wants a low maintenance garden, but what does that really mean? For four years, Native Son Gardens, the design company of Danny Bravens, has been ousting lawns and installing native plant gardens that can be used while requiring less maintenance than traditional lawn-filled landscapes. In this talk, he covers many of the mistakes and successes they had along the way, as well as the specific practices they adopted in their search for lawnless Texas yards.

Speaker Bio

Danny Bravens is the founder and lead landscape designer of native Son Gardens and has always been drawn to nature. A few years ago, after spending ten years in the film industry, he began taking courses in landscape design and botany as a fun hobby. When the pandemic hit and he lost a good paying job, he decided to throw away the film for landscaping and started this company the next day. That was a good decision. On the company’s first project, he met his partner, Hector. Native son Garden has since installed over 100 landscape designs, redesigned the main entrance of the Long Center, experimented with seed-sowing meadows, and grown small companies into slightly smaller companies. It was fun and hard, but also incredibly rewarding to turn an outdated grass into a sustainable, beautiful native landscape. You can follow Nativeson Garden on Instagram.

When/Location: March 6th, 7:30pm

Danny will speak on Thursday, March 6th at 7:30pm. The approximately one hour talk with Q&A will be held at the North Austin location at Leaf Landscape Supply on Pond Springs Road. The seats are located inside the main building.
