Mindfulness and meditation are not opposed to each other. They are existential partners, encountering life as it unfolds with curiosity and attentiveness.
When I was living as a monk in Thailand, I remember sitting quietly with my teacher after meditating one morning.
I was trying so hard to get it right. I stopped thinking and sat perfectly still, trying to look like a real monk meditating.
He just smiled and said:
“Peace doesn’t come by effort. It comes when we stop trying to make this moment any different.”
That moment changed the way I understood my practice, and the way I have shared it ever since.
Because mindfulness is not about achieving a higher state or escaping discomfort. It’s about learning to accept life as it is, with compassion, curiosity, and consideration.
Even if things feel messy and uncertain. Especially when you do that.
The core of practice
The practice is the same whether you are teaching a client, teaching a class, supporting a patient, or simply sitting with your emotions.
Stay with what you have here. Let it unfold.
When we can be fully present, without revising or analyzing, just observing, we create a space for others (and ourselves) to feel safe enough to grow.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. There is only a sense of presence.
“Mindfulness is not about correcting others; it’s about being with them so they remember that they were never broken.” — Sean Fargo
