Are apples suitable for keto?

Strictly speaking, there are no foods that qualify as “keto.” Ketosis is a metabolic state that the body enters when carbohydrates are very low.

One small apple (149 g) contains about 20 g of total carbohydrates, which can use up your daily carbohydrate limit for strict keto followers.

Some people on the keto diet limit their carbohydrate intake to no more than 20 grams a day. So eating just one small apple won’t help you and may bring you out of ketosis.

But using a small amount of apples in a recipe that makes a lot fits perfectly with both a low-carb lifestyle and a midlife macro-balance lifestyle.

Carbs in regular apple dump cake vs. carbs in this low-carb version

Traditional dump cake recipes made with boxed yellow cake mix, sugar, and canned apple pie filling can easily exceed 55 to 65 grams of total carbohydrates per slice and over 35 grams of added sugar.

This updated Sugar Free Mama version contains 9 grams of total carbs and 6 grams of net carbs per serving made with fresh apples, while the fully keto version made with zucchini and apple pie extract drops to just 6 grams of total carbs and 4 grams of net carbs per serving. All without added sugar. You get the cozy comfort of apple pie without the carb crash that usually follows.

baking tips

If the center is too jiggly after 35 minutes, increase the temperature to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, covering the edges with foil if necessary. The cake will continue to set even as it cools. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Gently reheating the slices in the microwave or oven will restore the baked texture.

Brenda’s note:

I use an apple corer and peeler tool to make the preparation quick and even.

If you don’t have monk fruit allulose, check my sweetener conversion table and adjust with another sugar-free sweetener.

Greek yogurt keeps the cake moist and adds protein. This version doesn’t require heavy cream.

For a fall twist, sprinkle with a little sugar-free cinnamon “crumble” before baking.

Updated October 2025: This recipe originally used 1 cup coconut flour and 1/2 cup butter. A lot of commenters said it was drying so I decided to make it perfect. I added Greek yogurt for more protein and reduced the butter. There is an option to make it keto by using zucchini instead.
