When she was 45, my mother cut her breast-length hair into a fairy. She told me at the time that her long hair looked bad for “women of a certain age.” I don’t know if she really believed in the rules or if she felt it wasn’t her place, but that didn’t matter. This moment, and many other moments, are certain of the ideas that have grown up in my little elementary school mind. But unexpectedly, and just like that… it ultimately freed me from that outdated mentality.
Now that the show is in its third season, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis) have been around in his mid-50s. It’s great to be interested in the territory of “women of a certain age” and is pleased to report that she has not been a victim of the same clichés that my mother did (she later resurrected).
When I talk about Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, I imagine a late 30s version of the city that ended in 2004. At the time, Carrie wore her blonde hair past her shoulders and in the middle forever. Charlotte always side-parted her medium length brunette hair. The redheaded Miranda was a follower of Vixy Cut. You might expect these characters to move on to something more “age-friendly” in more than 20 years, but these days Carrie still has long blonde hair.
