I’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
“Breakfast jumps off your metabolism after a night fast, and often sets a tone about how you eat the rest of the day,” says Brittany Brown, a nutritious nutritionist who nourishes a baby in Nova Scotia, Canada.
And skipping a morning meal may sound tempting (whether you’re trying to cut back on intermittent fasting or calories), you’ll want to think twice before doing so. “Many of my clients often end up overeating later in the day when they skip or skip breakfast, reaching low-nutrition choices that don’t support their health goals,” Brown warns.

Although there is no shade in your AM protein smoothie or granola bowl, choosing a warm, delicious breakfast should be a great choice when you are trying to lose weight, stay energized, and keep your hunger cues under control.

1. They’re more balanced
On its own, a handful of granola, a regular bowl of yogurt or oatmeal, or a stubborn egg or two eggs lack nutrients (and nutritional diversity). Conversely, filling your plate with heartfelt fares and balanced macros will help you achieve success all day long.
“A balanced morning meal can help reduce blood sugar levels and stress hormones, and help your body lose weight,” explains Brown.
2. They prioritize Whole Foods
Overall and minimal processed foods are ideal for keeping your weight down and health.
In fact, recent studies have found that people who eat minimally processed foods lose twice as much weight and have less cravings than people who eat more highly highly extended foods. Another study of overweight or obese participants showed that calorie intake after breakfast egg and toast was less than post-breakfast grain intake and less hunger.
“All food breakfasts tend to be high in protein, fiber and healthy fats,” adds Brown.
Additionally, many processed breakfast foods are rich in carbohydrates, sugar-rich, causing glucose spikes and crashes, and writes out bad news about your overall weight, energy, and metabolic health.
3. They let you know your bloating
If you’re used to drinking smoothies or protein shakes for breakfast, your body may not be “clocking” it. “These drinks may be handy, but they don’t have to chew, so it’s easy to drink beyond the fullness cues.

Realistically, you may be lacking in time and energy to cook a delicious breakfast every morning, so it’s important to be flexible when needed. “Life can be unpredictable, so always try not to get caught up in perfecting your diet,” advises Brown. In these cases, it’s easier to keep some grab-and-go breakfast convenient, while aiming for as well-balanced macros and low sugar as possible.

Final Tip: Even if losing weight is your goal, even in the case of more processed breakfasts, it can be helpful to think about what to add, not what to take away. “Look at what you can do to roll it up more. Add fruits and vegetables, a handful of nuts or cheese,” suggests Brown.
Consistency is also counted, so establish a morning trench and build breakfast for satisfaction and nutrition.
