Wendy’s Fall Garden in the Okanagan Valley

Wendy's Fall Garden in the Okanagan Valley

Hello GPODers!

Last week, I received an inspiring post from Cleo in Washington, a long-time GPOD reader but first-time contributor (at Clo’s Back Garden, late October). It’s always exciting to receive a post for the first time, but it’s equally exciting to receive an update from someone you haven’t heard from in a while. Today we have an update on fall gardens from Wendy Newman from British Columbia. Her garden was first featured in 2017 (Gardens of the Okanagan Valley) and featured colorful summer plants. Seven years later, we get to see how her space has changed and what it looks like when the fall foliage takes center stage.

Hi,

I’ve collected some photos of my autumn garden.

I live in Canada’s Okanagan Valley, where summers are typically hot and dry and winters are cold. In spring, the garden is filled with the muted colors of unfurling leaves, bulbs, and ephemeral plants, and in summer, many perennials paint the garden with blues, bright pinks, and sunny oranges. But it’s fall when the trees and shrubs take center stage, filling the garden with the gorgeous earthy tones of changing leaves.

thank you,

Of course, as Wendy said, the leaves are at their most beautiful in the fall. But she also has some great flowers that offer more color and contrasting shapes. This giant guara planting creates a beautiful mist of pink and white flowers.

Autumn house front and surrounding gardenI really love the layers of interest Wendy creates in bed and captures it so beautifully in her photos. The eye can easily move from short plants to tall trees and shrubs.

The pretty purple and pink flowers in front of the beds are nice, but the various shrubs and small trees are clearly the stars. This photo also provides a glimpse of the impressive Okanagan Valley that surrounds the Wendy’s property.

Pergola surrounded by autumn ornamental plantsThe private pergola becomes even more beautiful with the colorful foliage surrounding it. This must be an absolutely wonderful place to host a summer dinner party or enjoy a mild fall afternoon.

autumn lavender plantTrees and shrubs are the stars of the fall garden, but the right perennials and grasses obviously have their place too. Lavender attracts a lot of attention for its cool blue-green leaves and faded flowers. A bright red ornamental grass (perhaps ‘Shenandoah’ switchgrass (Panicum virgatum ‘Shenandoah’, zones 4-9)?) is a nice contrast.

Wendy, thank you again for sharing your garden with us! It was definitely worth the wait to see how much my space evolved and how great it looked at the end of the season. But we hope we won’t have to wait too long for the next update.
