Breaking Free: The Power of a Month-long Sobriety Challenge

While other months of the year are memorable for drug use prevention and other equally important themes, #Sober October is a time of self-challenge. That is, to see if you can go a month without drinking any alcoholic beverages. During the month of October, participants will try to stay sober for 31 days. Then see what happens to your health. Hey, even if you’re an occasional drinker, this might be something you should do. (What if you’re trying to get sober and find out that you’re more than an occasional drinker? And what if you find out it’s impossible to stay sober for that long? Features (Is it possible that you are approaching sexual alcoholism?!)

Benefits of abstinence

Many people who participate in #Sober October sleep better, have lower blood sugar and sometimes blood pressure levels, and some even lose weight. According to clinical research, people who experience improvements in digestion and liver function and use this month as an opportunity to explore themselves more (i.e., become more self-aware) and utilize mindfulness techniques such as yoga and meditation There are some too. Some people feel that cutting back on alcoholic beverages in October can even affect your friendships, with some people not spending time with you unless you’re sober. (Think about it, are they really my friends? Hmm.) True friends enjoy your company, even if you don’t drink. They will be with you no matter what. Evidence-based research shows that when people stop drinking, there are fewer accidents such as traffic accidents, trauma, burns, drownings, and even homicides. Drinking is highly associated with suicide, so not drinking will affect these statistics as well. Also, if you are participating, consider how many sick days you would normally take compared to October.

Celebrities on board

Celebrities (and others) may be looking to improve their mental health and achieve a better work-life balance simply by cutting back on alcoholic beverages. Some celebrities, like Anne Hathaway, knew that drinking alcohol was not in their best interest. Famous Australian model Elle Macpherson has enjoyed decades of sobriety. Demi Lovato has been living a healthy sober life for years after being hospitalized for a drug overdose. Another famous actress, Valerie Bertinelli, said that being sober makes her feel better each morning and doesn’t feel groggy or tired. Not drinking alcohol helps her deal with her emotions and take an overall approach to her mental health. There’s a lot more.

How to share #Sober October

Of course, feel free to share your journey on social media! Please share your thoughts, feelings and experiences. Share events you’re participating in or events you’re hosting. Share your commitment and ask others for their commitment. You might consider giving a short presentation at school about what you do and why you do it (middle school and high school students are a great audience). Some companies want to invite you to a sharing session. Why not hold a fundraising event, perhaps in memory of someone who has lost their battle with alcohol? Funds can also be raised for support services or education.
