Calico hair is the wildest colour trend of the summer

In 2022 I declared myself about the trends in nostalgic beauty, and worried that the aesthetics of the decade would be defined only by reference to the past (lol, looking at the future). But the multicolored hair trend that took over my feed almost regrets my words.

Calico hair is a new trend that may remind you of the thick highlights of early Aughts. (Remember Kelly Clarkson’s thick-colored stripes?) It is given a suitable name for the tricolor fur of Calico cats, and usually features blonde, brown, copper, red, and/or black. New York-based colorist Megan Masterson believes that is likely to begin, as it is a statement made up primarily of natural tints.

This look includes a simple palette, but the uniqueness of the cat coat stimulates endless color combinations and arrangements. I’ve seen many take on Tiktok and Instagram. Some people choose the blond, brown, copper Peekaboo patch, which is only revealed when lifting the top layer of hair. Others want a bold version with patches and stripes splashed with blonde, orange and red all over their hair. I found a free hoho box knitting that was fed into the calico.

If you’re thinking of trying out Calico hair, here are some things you can expect. Usually, stylists want consultation prior to actual appointments. “Everyone has a very different vision for Karico’s hair,” says Lois Bonds, a London-based hairstylist who specializes in textured hair. Trends work in a variety of lengths, curl types and densities, but this part of the process should not be skipped or rushed, as it helps to ensure that the results are what you want.

If you have medium hair, you are the ideal candidate for this trend, explains Bonds. The longer your hair, the easier it is to arrange sections and colors. If you have short hair, it’s not impossible. As you can see in the inspiration in the photo below, you may be limited in color and alignment options.

Maelee Baxter, a hairstylist and colorist based in Gainesville, Florida, recommends that you consider stripes of color for a more impressive look if you have straight or wavy hair. “If you have kinky or curly hair, you’ll get more grid patterns and abstract blocking of colors (A) you can have a higher impact. Bonsu adds, “Textured hair looks like a real Calico Cat. You can really see your vision come true.”
