Chew wisely

Life after gum graft surgery – Wow!

^^ How did I spend most of the week?

Last Wednesday I had to have a gum graft due to a receding lower gum line. They took the gum from the top of my mouth and sewed it to the bottom gum line.

The actual procedure wasn’t too bad. I was expecting a huge needle and lots of blood, but the needle was small and didn’t hurt, and I didn’t even taste the blood. It wasn’t enough to dig cavities. (Lorazepam helped!)

I have some silly putty-like stuff on the top of my mouth that protects that area (which didn’t bother me in the slightest), but my bottom right gum, where the graft is, is awful!

I’m currently on day 6 and without saying anything too dramatic, I’m declaring this recovery worse than either birth. If you delay taking ibuprofen, your entire jaw will start to burn and throbbing. Between foot surgery, wisdom teeth, and two births, I have never been in pain for so long, day and night. (I know I’m glad I didn’t have other horrible treatments, I know). Shhh! ! Eating is getting easier, though, so I’m hoping the worst is behind us. (However, I am supposed to have the other side do it in the future, but hmmm, I might not do it.)

The Ride Home

It was obviously difficult for me to eat and I was on a mushy diet. I’m planning a separate blog post about how I nourished myself during this time, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. I ate a lot of smoothies and ice cream.

Splendid Spoon smoothies are ready to drink with no preparation required. It’s not just juice in a fancy bottle, it’s made with real protein. That’s good! We have a one-time gift box of 10 smoothies with no subscription required. It’s a little hidden, so go to (Discover) then (Gift Shop) to find it. I also sent them to new moms and moms recovering from general surgery.

We also drank this local juice grown on a small farm in Front Royal, Virginia. It’s a great way to get your veggies in even if you can’t chew them. If you’re looking for locally grown vegetables this season, check out Robby D’s Lil Greens.

I drink it for relaxation!

last supper

But here’s everything I ate the week before when I was still able to eat anything: burgers, corn on the cob, crunchy bread, sandwiches, and lots of granola!

Mazen made me a hamburger for dinner, so I had one for lunch the next day.

Blue Apron Buffalo Cheese Chicken + World Cup!

Blue Apron Salmon + Smashed Potato

Aster’s Fancy Happy Hour

Hugh Jas’ Fishwife Salmon Salad

(These salads were consumed before the Cyclospora news really peaked. I can’t eat much salad right now, so the timing worked out well.)

It’s been a summer of fresh + yogurt! Or…

I’m addicted to nectarines!

soccer finals

Since I won’t be able to exercise for a week, I timed my surgery to coincide with the end of soccer season 🙁 It’s been a tough season – summer is the best!

Have a wonderful week!
