In yoga, there is something called counter pose. (If you twist in one direction, counter this by twisting in the opposite direction.) This idea of ”countering” can be applied to our daily lives and provides a very practical post-holiday stress reduction strategy. I will. Here’s how it works:
After a vacation full of food, drink, relaxation, and connection, mild stress often takes a backseat and fades away when we return home. Sure, I’ve jokingly said, “I need vacation after vacation,” but that’s more of an excuse than a true appreciation. After a blessed vacation, complaining about stress may feel a little silly or even spoiled.
Instead of brushing it off or boiling it down, why not plan for it? What if you were just going to feel some mild post-holiday stress? Then, like a yoga instructor planning counterposes, plan right away for the week after your vacation.
If we end up eating indulgent foods during the holidays, we counter this by planning a list of stomach-soothing foods to eat the following week. If you enjoy alcohol, chances are it will be countered by a week of liver-friendly drinks the next week. If you spent most of your vacation sitting and relaxing, incorporate a leisurely hike into the following week to maintain a slow but steady energy. If you have a million emails coming back, give yourself permission to be two hours late and spend those two hours checking your email at your local coffee shop.
Counters help you make practical plans. But let’s go further! When we argue back, we are acknowledging our indulgence, which is transmitted from the subconscious mind to the conscious mind. We are being refreshingly honest with ourselves. By bringing it to the forefront, you can completely break those troublesome subconscious thought patterns. “During the holidays, I lacked self-control, so my jeans got too tight.” “Yes, these jeans fit perfectly, but they make me feel sick to my stomach, and my mind is full of memories of delicious, indulgent food. ”
Vacation is all about connecting with others and with yourself. Why come back and disconnect? Stay true to yourself by approaching your vacation with eyes wide open (and a heart full of great memories).
Until next time,
Laura
