Dua Lipa is looking to the animal kingdom for nail inspiration, bringing back mid-2010s mani trends in the process. While tortoiseshell hair accessories are everywhere these days, dubbed the Carolyn Bessette Kennedy effect, tortoiseshell manicure has been pretty dormant since its heyday in the 2010s, when it was one of the nail art trends. Until now! The radically optimistic pop star brought back tortoiseshell nails, proving that reptile-inspired manicures are timeless and versatile.

Lipa’s nails were done by manicurist Kim Truong, who filed the pop star’s nails into medium-length ovals, then created a tortoiseshell effect across Lipa’s nails. She started with a light caramel base and applied a dark brown color to a series of small blobs of varying sizes to recreate the signature shell pattern.
