Last weekend, we hosted some friends at our home on Bald Head Island. I’d like to share with you what happened.
Old Baldy
Last weekend I spent a long weekend on Bald Head Island with five friends. It was my first time taking a group from Cville and we had a great time. Unfortunately, there was barely any sun in sight so we didn’t spend much time at the beach, but we made up for it by relaxing at home and playing lots of games. Thomas is getting ready for a golf trip in Charleston with friends in October so he stayed home with the boys. Hopefully the weather will be better than it was for us.
Thursday
We arrived on the 3pm ferry on a Thursday and it was everyone’s first visit to BHI so it was fun to show them the basics and major landmarks.
After arriving and unpacking, we went to the Maritime Market to buy some groceries and food for the family in the evening, including a chilled Savvy B!
Shrimp + Grits
The Maritime Market family menu is perfect for the evening after you arrive and just want to relax – the shrimp and grits are amazing!
Beach visit
After dinner we headed straight to the beach knowing that today might be the only day without rain.
Tattoo!
Check out my semi-temporary tattoos! A lot of my friends have tattoos so I bought a few to try. The island is from InkBox and the butterfly is from Ink Art Link. I would love to try the InkBox pens but am worried the tips might be too fine. Has anyone tried them? These last 1-2 weeks! The one on my wrist is mostly gone from scrubbing and washing my hands, but the one on my ankle is still looking great after a week!
One of them is real. Which one do you think it is? The top or the bottom? We had some sheets so we stuck them up.
Game Night
We went back to the house for some games and ice cream.
Friday
On Friday, we woke up in the rain and started the day with a sumptuous breakfast prepared by our morning cook, Chef Aaron: eggs, bacon, bagels, and coffee. We loved sitting around the big table and playing New York Times games (Wordle, Connection, The Mini) to get through the morning.
Climb the lighthouse!
By mid-morning the sun was partially out so we decided to climb Old Baldy.
A bald old man and a bald old man!!
Oh, the joke I did with Aaron.
Climbing the 108 steps is not that hard.
Marsh Views – So amazing!
Beach Walk
But did you notice the sky? The sun came out! We couldn’t wait to get to the beach since rain was forecasted all day. We were dressed for a walk so we took a 30 minute stroll around South Beach before heading back for lunch.
15 minutes of sun
After eating sandwiches at home, we packed all our stuff into the golf cart, smeared on $50 worth of sunscreen and headed to the beach. And we were all done!
And within 15 minutes of sitting down it started to rain (though the hourly weather forecast said there was still time).
The rain started to get heavier so half our group headed out and Julie, Sean and I huddled under our umbrellas hoping the rain would stop. After about 30 minutes we gave up and packed up in the rain.
But as soon as we got back to the golf cart, this happened!
We debated what to do and tried to go to the beach again but soon it started raining again – an unlucky day for us!
And we couldn’t go to the beach for a few days after that. The rain kept coming down and we were lucky to leave the island on Sunday because on Monday the area was under a major flood warning and the roads were flooded. It was a bit scary there.
Night Out
After a shower and some reading on the porch, we went to the Jailhouse for dinner.
Jules Karaoke
After filling up on seafood, we headed to Jules for some karaoke.
The bar was packed and the karaoke was great fun!
Sean and I sang “Hooked On A Feeling,” the group sang “Country Roads,” and Aaron sang the Luke Bryan classic “Country Girl Shake It For Me!”
Saturday
Saturday was our last day and it rained heavily. Aaron made waffles!
shopping
We went shopping at Maritime in the morning, people were buying hoodies and hats.
Twins!
Sardine salad lunch plate
Afternoon pumpkin beer tasting
Burritos for dinner
For dinner, Chef Shawn grilled chicken and peppers to create a burrito buffet.
Movie Night
We saw “Where the Crawdads Sing” – the perfect swamp movie! Everyone absolutely loved it.
I’ll be back next time for some sun!
ferry
…I was pretty wet! But I managed to get back.
Root Hillsboro
On the drive home, we passed through Hillsboro to check out my mom’s new Beatles-themed art show. Each painting is inspired by a Beatles song. You can see and buy her work here. If you have any Beatles fans in your life, these pieces would make great gifts.
