Gabriel’s Garden in New South Wales

Gabriel's Garden in New South Wales

Hello gpoders!

Most of us in the Northern Hemisphere count down the day before spring finally arrives next month, while our south neighbors are beginning to say goodbye to the summer. As many of us look to snow and ice, we visit Gabriel Shepherd in Dondindinghinglong, New South Wales, Australia. Located on the West Coast (half between Sydney and Brisbane), Gabriel’s lush landscapes are a beautiful taste of what makes the southern hemisphere gardening look like it is now.

My garden is located in the middle of the north coast west of Kempsey, on three acres of Don Ding Dinson. I have lived here for the rest of my life and started gardening at a young age as a little girl. I have a variety of plants in my garden and have recently planted over 20 different trees, shrubs and succulents.

I have a Japenese maple tree earlier this year, as our first daughter’s middle name is maple and the tree name has a special place in my heart. I planted it. As the seasons changed, I thought about how beautiful the leaves were. I think they are so beautiful, so of course I had to go home with me. We also planted magnolia, flame trees (Brachychiton acerifolius, zones 9-11), blue cypress spine (Callitris columnellaris, zones 9-12), and lavender. I went out into the garden and always put a smile on my face when they open and show beautiful vibrant colors in it, and always had pork of different colours (Carpobrotus glaucescens, zones 8-11) there is. The big statement piece for the garden is CYCAD, which has been planted for over 30 years. It’s huge, it simply tells your own story.

A few months ago, I had the image of making my own arches, so I decided to make the image a reality and create my own arches in the garden. I now planted two climbing pandrea plants (pandreaming ajasminoids, zones 9-11). Personally, I sit down, look at the garden, see what I have accomplished, and at the end of the day I am content to say, “I did that.” Gardening means so much to me. It’s calming, relaxing and really fun. When I’m in the garden, I forget about my worries and focus on my plants. After seeing mine, I hope you get inspiration to get more into your garden.

Please, Gabriel

Big garden with new plantsIt’s easy for Gabriel to work hard! The garden is already lush and green with thick plantings in the border beds, but many of the new trees planted are covered in mulch, staked and ready for years of growth.

Big grassThe Open Expands will ultimately become more shady and private (though Gabriel doesn’t seem to have to peek at his neighbors and worry).

A bird bath with succulents plantedThe entire Gabriel landscape features a variety of statues that add elegance, art and personality to the garden. Others offer more planting opportunities, such as this bird bath and its collection of colorful succulents.

Fern-like leaf plantsI think this is the CYCAD that Gabriel mentioned in her intro. CYCAD, often mistaken for Palms, is actually more closely associated with conifers and has a more attractive history than homo sapiens. CYCAD was once found abundantly around the world when dinosaurs roamed the globe. They are now very rare in the wild, but in the garden they make a big statement, reminding us of the evolution of our planet.

Garden Bench SwingA swing bench for sitting and enjoying the garden will become even cuter as new plantings grow around it!

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos of your garden with us, Gabriel! From familiar to unfamiliar, it’s always eye-opening to see what grows on the other side of the world.
