About Dr. Robert Thurman:

Robert Thurman (1941-2026) was an American Buddhist writer and scholar who wrote, edited, and translated many books on Tibetan Buddhism. He was the Je Tsongkhapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism at Columbia University until his retirement in June 2019. He held the first endowed chair in Buddhist studies in the West. Educated at Phillips Exeter and Harvard University, he spent nearly 30 years studying Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism as a private student of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He has written both academic and popular books and lectured widely around the world. As president of the Buddhist Institute of America, he convened the first Inner Science Conference with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1984 at Amherst College.
