How the axolotl's unique regenerative powers are impacting dermatology

Regenerative beauty is emerging as a growing category, and few creatures epitomize its potential more than the axolotl. The axolotl is a unique salamander with the rare ability to regenerate limbs, parts of the heart, and even brain tissue. Inspired by this “water dragon,” new aesthetic company RegenX uses axolotl biology to develop skin care that promotes skin healing and regeneration. It may sound like science fiction, but RegenX combines axolotl-inspired science and advanced technology to harness the regenerative power of the skin in a way that can redefine beauty treatments.

super power skin care

“This really applies to the field of regenerative medicine, which is arguably the hottest field in beauty right now. We’re not just moisturizing the skin; we’re actually activating regenerative pathways. “By doing so, we aim to rebuild youthful, functioning tissue,” explains Miami dermatologist Jill Waibel, M.D. “RegenX takes skin care in a new direction by harnessing the biology of the axolotl, the most regenerative animal ever studied in the lab.”

According to RegenX CEO Beth Corson, the brand’s breakthrough lies in the isolation of the axolotl’s extracellular matrix (ECM), which provides a unique scaffold for scarless healing and cell regeneration. . “Their ability to regenerate is unparalleled,” Colson said. “We wanted to apply this biological phenomenon to skin care and enhance the skin’s ability to repair and rejuvenate.”

Before and After: “Restore is very powerful for post-surgery recovery,” says Dr. Waibel. “Inspired by the axolotl’s ability to regenerate limbs and organs, this treatment is a game-changer for recovery after Fraxel laser treatment.”

accelerated healing

RegenX’s formulation is gaining attention for both daily skin care and post-procedure care. Dr. Waibel said patients have experienced accelerated healing after treatments such as microneedling. “We activate a specific set of genes involved in skin repair and longevity,” she says. RegenX technology works with the skin’s biological functions to deliver visibly smoother, healthier results without any animal testing.

“We performed biopsies and were able to show, through gene expression, that collagen stimulation was further increased within seven days. Sun damage in patients was also reduced and non-ablative It was very effective when combined with lasers,” Dr. Waibel said.

The product is not yet available, but Dr. Waibel said it is expected to be available soon. “They are still in the testing phase and may be licensed to major pharmaceutical companies in the future. The three products currently in development are Hydrate, Rejuvenate, and Restore, each designed to regenerate skin after treatment. Restore has been specifically tested for use following Fraxel laser procedures.”

Formulated without animal testing

“Our cosmetics line is never tested on animals,” Colson explained, noting that the active ingredients are grown in a lab rather than taken from animals. “We use laboratory-synthesized, purified, secreted bioactive molecules inspired by the regenerative properties of the axolotl. Therefore, they are not harmful to the animal and maintain a strong regenerative effect. You can.”

collagen builder

As regenerative medicine gains traction, Dr. Waibel says these axolotl-inspired formulations are at the forefront. “Inspired by the axolotl, the company’s products upregulate genes associated with collagen production, cell regeneration, and anti-inflammation, opening the door to treatments for conditions such as acne scars and wrinkles. It could change the way we deal with quality issues,” she added.
