And at that time a decree was issued by Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be registered. This registration was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria. And everyone was registered and each went to his city. And Joseph also entered Judea from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, and went up to the city of David called Bethlehem. For he was of the house and family of David. With children.
And when they were there, it happened that her days were complete and she should be rescued. And she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger. Because there was no space for them in the inn. And in the same country there was a shepherd who watched over his flock and kept watch at night. And, behold, the angel of the Lord stood by them, and the brightness of God shone around them. And they were very afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be to all the peoples.
For today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you, the Lord Christ. And this will be a sign to you. You will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Suddenly a great host of heavenly hosts appeared with angels, praising God and saying, “Glory be to God in the highest,” and on earth there will be peace for men of good will. And after the angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see these words that the Lord has revealed to us that are about to happen.”
And they came quickly. Then they found Mary, Joseph, and an infant lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they understood the words that were spoken to them regarding this child. And all who heard it wondered. and of what the shepherds told him. But Mary took all these words to heart and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as they had been told.
