So what are the benefits of cooking meat “low and slow”? Of course, the final result! When cooking slow oven pork shoulder using this method, the roast turns out to be very tender.

But if you don’t have a shoulder cut or pork butt on hand, can you use another pork cut? yes! Pork strips work just as well. Not only are pork strips cheaper than roasts, but the dry rub penetrates the meat further.

🤷🏻‍♀️Recipe FAQ

How do you serve pulled pork?

Once the pulled pork is ready, there are all sorts of ways you can serve it. Here are some examples:

• Stack the meat on a bun and drizzle with barbecue sauce. And whatever you do, don’t forget the oil and vinegar slaw.
•Another way to enjoy pulled pork is in corn tortillas topped with grated cheese, diced onion, cilantro, and sour cream.
• Great in quesadillas, rolled into burritos, or used to make delicious Mexican breakfast burritos.

Do you cover the pork shoulder when cooking in the oven?

I highly recommend covering the pork with foil while slow cooking. The foil keeps the pork shoulder from drying out and helps the pork retain its juices.

If you prefer your pork to have a crisp texture around the edges, you can easily sear the pork for a few minutes after shredding.

pro tips

There are many pre-made dry rub options, but I like to make my own blends. We know that not everyone enjoys making things from scratch. If you’re limited on time or just want to keep it simple, you can buy Dry Rub instead. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5 days. Freeze in freezer bags for longer storage.
