I try to get outside every day for a walk or run (or some other sport like cycling or basketball), but I often debate with myself whether I should use my phone to listen to music, podcasts, or audiobooks. Should I bring earphones or just to listen to music? Become technology-free.
Technology-free is my favorite option. I would like to share the reason.
I love listening to audiobooks and podcasts. I’ve spent hours running and walking listening and learning, and I think that’s a valuable use of my time. This is very good.
I also love music. Grooming to old songs, exploring new ones, dancing to songs my kids are listening to…it lifts my spirits.
But being technology-free is what I love the most, and it’s only recently that I’ve rediscovered this classic joy.
Without technology, I feel more present and more open to experiencing the world. I feel more connected to nature. I try not to miss seeing small children playing and smiling at the park. Life is better in full color.
Plus, I do my best thinking while walking or running without technology. The best ideas come to mind. I solve the most difficult problems. I am thinking more deeply about my own experiences. This is worth more than 100 audiobooks.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I can step out of my comfort bubble. Most of us are connected to technology all day long, from the moment we wake up in the morning. There may be some unconnected time in small pockets, such as while showering or cooking (although some people listen to music there too), while eating, exercising, etc. , even while commuting, we tend to be connected to our devices. I don’t think technology is bad. Technology can give us very good things. But I think we tend to use it as a comfort bubble to isolate ourselves from the world. Stepping out of that bubble every day is one of the most important things we can do. By doing so, we can avoid shrinking our ability to accept life as it is. Trust me, I’ve seen it shrink for many.
What does it look like to step out of your comfort zone and spend each day fully connected to the world?
